Oṋḿkára

20.11.2020

Today I dreamt that I was at some kind of university in the physics department. Apparently I had been interested in studying physics. There was a big whiteboard or rather some kind of digital whiteboard which had a big map of the universe on it that at first looked a bit like these oval shaped maps of the world.

Then some intelligent student or professor noticed that there was something not quite right in the way the map was displayed and he explained something and drew a line perfectly around that ovally-shape universe. The colour of that line was red. Then he said that as one gets there one can hear various sounds, but the loudest sound of all was “omn” (aum, oṋḿkára or prańava). Then it seemed like he turned on some kind of speaker and made us listen to it. I was a bit afraid it would be too loud but it wasn’t. The sound pervaded everything. However, that student explained that actually one could not hear it and that this sound was just a theoretical model (as it was also coming from the loudspeaker). Then the “lecture” ended and I walked around a bit in that university department.

Then I thought I’d tell those students “that actually it was indeed possible to hear that sound, and that there was a great yogi who could hear it at all times or anytime He wanted, and that He was just “next door” and that I could go and ask Him to come. And that in fact He could not only hear it Himself but that He could also make others hear it!” When I said this it was really as if Baba was also present there (in another room, as a student or professor or whatever). But the students were busy with other things and didn’t seem very interested. So everyone went his way. And various other things happened in the dream.

After I awoke, I realised that although we may not see Baba physically, He is always with us very near, as the nearest of near, as the innermost one.

The following is from Baba's discourse "The Attainment of Permanent Composure":

"Every idea in the mind has its own inherent sound. “In the beginning there was sound, and the sound was with God, and the sound was God”. This sound is Śabdha and consists of omn, hum’, phat, vaośat́, váśat, sváha, and namah. These are the acoustic roots which should be uttered before the corresponding action is performed. For instance, “Namo Brahmańe namah” [salutations to Brahma.”]. Before saying “namah” the ideation should be of self-surrender. “Namo devatáyae namah” [salutations to the gods]. When one recites “namah” it does not remain a mere word, but becomes an idea. Namah is derived from the root verb “nam” which means “I surrender myself”. Self-surrender is the main idea behind namah. With this sort of ideational sound, ideation and not the sound is the main factor. There are seven vibrational sounds such as this."

from the discourse "Acoustic Roots", in Ánanda Vacanámrtam Part 14:

"Now listen to these three sounds of aum: a, u, ma. They represent the creation, the retention [or preservation], and the destruction. The first sound, a, represents creation; the second sound, u, represents retention; the third sound, ma, represents destruction. So all those innumerable sounds, all those fifty sounds, are represented by these supreme sounds, a, u and ma; and collectively a-u-ma becomes aum. For each and every action there is a supporting sound in this universe. That supporting sound is called the acoustic root of that action. ... So then for all the universe, the acoustic side is aum – A-U-M. It includes all the spheres of work also. It is the collective sound of all the work of the universe."

(this might explain why the line that was drawn around the map of the universe was red)

from the discourse "The Sound of God"

"That’s why prańava is called Prańavátmakaḿ Brahma. Prá – nu + al = prańava. Prańava means that entity that helps the sádhaka to come in contact with Parama Puruśa. In Sanskrit another name for prańava is Shabda Brahma – Brahma expressed as shabda. Shabda means sound. So a day will come when this prańava will become a crude reality for you. Now, for some of you, prańava is in dreamland, [but actually] it is a crude reality."

Baba, i love You
